Deep Learning 1

Another incredible round of Deep Learning has been enjoyed by students.

They have enjoyed a series of creative experiences, extending learning beyond the classroom, and giving them the chance to explore and delve into a feature of the curriculum in more detail.

A total of 17 units was on offer with something for all interests, whether the Arts, Humanities, Science or Sport. The core principle is that all units offer opportunities to develop a range of transferable skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, the ability to work under pressure and with good humour, which we believe are at the heart of education.

Students travelled all over the city, meeting different people and gathering a huge amount of knowledge in the process.

A Boxeo Cubano unit served as an introductory course to Cuban boxing, exploring its rich history, unique techniques, and cultural significance. Students learned about the distinctive elements that set Cuban boxing apart from other styles, with an emphasis on the integration of music, rhythm, and technical skills.

In Exploring the Barren Rock, students prepared to become competent rock climbers, building upon the skills already established within the PE curriculum. They learned the skills to safely climb the crags and belay each other, as well as delving a bit deeper into Hong Kong's growing climbing scene.

A group enjoyed a captivating mobile photography and web3 workshop designed by National Geographic photographer Ali Ghorbanim, learning about composition, lighting, storytelling and editing.

Others became sand artists, learning basic skills for building with sand, trying out different tools and techniques, and exploring creative ideas.

Students in the ASDAN Independent Travel unit learned to prepare for expected and unexpected situations as they made their way around Hong Kong, taking part in a treasure hunt and completing challenges for their ASDAN courses.

Others enjoyed pottery, sewing, 3D printing, watersports, woodwork and tessellations.

Another group enjoyed a captivating three-day journey into Hong Kong's vibrant seafood industry, visiting a sustainable fish farm, the HK Shark Foundation, the Maritime Museum and a snorkeling trip to Sharp Island. A Hong Kong Foodie group explored the city’s vibrant food culture, visiting bustling local markets, where they enjoyed fresh produce, aromatic spices, and traditional street foods.

A Paint and Stitch group learned to elevate their artistic skills by combining painting and embroidery on canvas.

A Thinking in Systems group looked at ‘The Big Picture’ of the political, social, economic and environmental systems that govern the world we live in, visiting the HK Biodiversity Museum, The Little Museum of the World and the HK Port.

Year 7 students participated in a new programme designed to introduce them to a vital aspect of the Human Technologies curriculum: The 4 Pillars of Health—Eat, Move, Relax, and Sleep. Students learned about nutritious foods in a workshop focused on healthy snacks. They explored the great outdoors with a nature-focused walk, discovering local trenches and the beauty of their environment. They also practiced Kung Fu, enhancing their physical fitness while cultivating discipline and focus. To unwind, students engaged in mindful activities including yoga and creative mindfulness sessions that promote self-expression and mental clarity. Finally they became ‘Sleep Detectives,’ exploring the secrets of better sleep and its significant impact on overall health.

This was the first iteration of what will be a total of four Deep Learning experiences for students this year. Every term they will enjoy a period of immersive learning, practical opportunities and real life experiences outside of the confines of the classroom, which we believe challenge many of the established norms of mainstream education.
